Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release
BOARDMAN, Ohio - Using a four-goal second period, the Mahoning Valley Phantoms put a wrap on their 2007-2008 North American Hockey League regular season with a 5-2 win over the U.S. National Team on Saturday night in front of nearly 1,100 fans at the Ice Zone in Boardman.
It did not take long for the Phantoms to get on the board first. With 4:24 expired in the first period, Robert Harrison took a pass from Kyle Bailey and backhanded a shot over U.S. goaltender Michael Clemente for the 1-0 lead.
Team USA's Jerry D'Amigo, however, then finished off a 2-on-1 break with Drew Shore to tie things up at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
The Phantoms four goal, second period explosion started with Stefan Salituro and Grant Blakey each notching goals in the first seven minutes of the frame to put the Phantoms up 3-1. Eric Ringel then blasted home a power play goal at the 17:00 mark, putting the Phantoms up by three.
Drew Shore's shorthanded breakaway marker at 17:55 cut the Phantoms lead back down to two, before Scott Moser slammed home his own rebound, and the Phantoms second power play goal, just 23 seconds later to give Mahoning Valley the 5-2 win.
Between the pipes, Garrett Bartus picked up his 23rd win of the season stopping 24 of the 26 U.S. shots. Clemente dropped his seventh game of the year, stopping 30 of 35 Phantoms shots.
The Phantoms went 2 for 4 on the power play while holding Team USA (28-26-4, 60 points) scoreless in three attempts with the man-advantage.
Mahoning Valley finishes the regular season with a 36-18-4 record - good for 76 points - and will now host the Alpena Ice Diggers in the first round of the NAHL playoffs beginning with Game One next Friday night at 7:15 p.m. at the Ice Zone.
