Magicians Earn Wild Card Playoff Spot

March 8, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Birmingham Magicians News Release

The first year Birmingham Magicians of the ABA were named a wild card team by the league this week. The Magicians ended the season with victories over top-ranked Indiana, 109-107 and 94-81 over the 8th ranked Atlanta Vision to earn one of the league's eight wild card spots. "We worked hard and fought through adversity all season", Jim Farmer, head coach said. "The guys deserve a shot at the title considering we played the toughest schedule in the league and could have easily won 90 percent of games we lost."

The Magicians play Friday, March 10, 2006, 7 p.m. against the Strong Island Sound, one of the hottest teams in the league with 7 straight victories headed into the first round of the ABA playoffs. The game will be played in Selden, NY at Suffolk Community College in Long Island. A win against the Sound will put the Magicians in the second round of the ABA playoffs and a rematch in Atlanta on March 17th against division rival Atlanta Vision.

Head coach, Jim Farmer is being honored at the SEC Basketball Tournament this weekend and has turned over the coaching reins to assistant Albert Owens for the game against the Strong Island Sound. "I really wanted to be with the guys, but this honor is something that has been planned for a while and I'm sure Coach Owens will do a great job with the team," Farmer said. The Magicians will also be without leading scorer, Brian Williams, who recently signed a deal to play overseas.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
