Bellingham Slam News Release

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The Bellingham Slam have announced they will open the 2006 American Basketball Association playoffs at home this Sunday, March 12 at 5 pm at Whatcom Pavilion. The Slam will battle the Tacoma Navigators in an I-5 grudge match to determine who will advance to the second round in this year's playoffs.

Tacoma won the season series against Bellingham, 4-1, but each loss was decided by four points or fewer. The last time the two teams met was for a pair of games in Bellingham on January 24 and 26, with the Slam dominating the first game by a score of 121-107, before losing a heartbreaker two nights later, 92-89. The Slam finished their inaugural regular season with an 18-14 record, going 6-3 in their final nine games, including a thrilling 99-98 win over Tim Hardaway and the Florida Pit Bulls on February 21.

The game will commence the ABA's single-elimination postseason tournament. The winner of the playoff game on Sunday will head on the road to play in the second round on Saturday, March 18 against the Pittsburgh Xplosion, who received a first round bye. The winner of that game, as well as the winners from the seven other second round games from around the league, will advance to the ABA's "Great Eight" Championship Tournament, taking place March 22-26 in Rochester, New York.

Tickets for the Slam's first round home playoff game against the Navigators are currently on sale via the Slam's website at www.bellinghamslam.com or by phone at 734-SLAM. Ticket prices remain the same from the regular season: Reserved courtside seats for $20, or general admission seating for $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and $5 for children 12 and under.
