Kansas Magic News Release
Five power play goals powered the Kansas Magic to an 8-7 victory Sunday over the Detroit Waza at Epic Indoor Sports in Overland Park, Kan.
The Magic (3-0) remained undefeated and is now in first place in the Eastern Division of the Professional Arena Soccer League. The defeat was the first for Detroit (4-1) this season.
Chaz O'Dell scored three of the Magic goals, two of them on the power play. The Magic had five power play goals in seven power play attempts.
After a scoreless first quarter, Kansas fell behind on a goal by Detroit's Miki Djerisilo at 3:59 of the second quarter. The Magic replied with goals from O'Dell, Matt Germain (on the power play) and Brett Porter to take the lead. Dominic Scicluna scored for Detroit on the power play just seven seconds before halftime to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Magic at the break.
Kansas struck for the first three goals of the third quarter from Daniel Jiregna, O'Dell and Brett Porter to take a 6-2 lead late in the period. Detroit narrowed the gap in the final two minutes of the period with goals from Tino Scicluna and Costea Decu.
Kansas seemed to put the game away in the fourth quarter with goals from Germain and O'Dell (both on the power play), but the Waza rallied with three goals in the final 1:50 to set the final margin.
The Waza ran out of steam in the final seconds, though. Detroit sixth attacker Darrel Quinn went to penalty box with 24 seconds to play on a foul that resulted in a shootout. Magic player/coach Randall Porter's shootout attempt was saved by Waza goalkeeper Vito Lonigro. The Magic was able to close out the game and the victory.
Kansas returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 3 with a home game against the Louisville Lightning. Kickoff is at 7:35 p.m. at Epic Indoor Sports.
