Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, N.J. -- Four-time National League batting champion and newly-named Newark Bears manager Bill Madlock will appear twice next week in the Newark area. The Bears manager will take part in the third annual Newark Technology Group Winter Golf Classic next Wednesday and will sign autographs next Saturday in conjunction with the team's National Anthem tryouts.
"I am excited to finally get out into the community and interact with our fans," Madlock said. "Wednesday will give me an opportunity to get to know some of the corporate people while Saturday's event will be a time to talk baseball with our loyal group of supporters."
The Golf Classic consists of 18 holes throughout businesses in downtown Newark. Golfers will walk from building to building, taking part in the miniature golf competition that encourages creativity as each business or corporation is entrusted with designing their own hole. For the second year in a row, the Bears will host a hole and serve as one of five starting locations throughout the city. The event is produced by Zing Marketing, a Newark-based entity and was founded by First Union Bank and National Redevelopment LLC. A turnout of over 200 golfers is expected.
On Saturday, March 1 at the Jersey Gardens Mall in Elizabeth, Madlock, whose 15-season major league career was highlighted by a 1979 World Series championship as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates, will sign autographs from 12 noon-2 p.m. in an area just off the Food Court. Starting at 10 a.m. and lasting until 2 p.m., Madlock's new employer will be conducting National Anthem Tryouts. The registration deadline for the tryout is set for Feb. 26.
The Newark Bears compete in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, capturing the league title in 2002. The Atlantic League consists of eight teams in five different states and enters its sixth season of competition on May 1. The Bears 2003 Schedule and Season Ticket Packages for their Fifth Anniversary in the City of Newark have already been announced and can be viewed at www.NewarkBears.com.
