Mad Dog Bites Ducks, But Mallards Quack To Win

Kansas City Outlaws News Release

At first, some fans thought it was an April Fool's joke. Mad Dog Madill on the ice again? Madill, a fan favorite with the old Kansas City Blades, hadn't skated professionally since the 1996-1997 campaign. Sure, he'd been doing some assistant coaching with the Outlaws, but when PA Announcer Steve Garrett announced the Kansas City starting Right Wing as Jeff "Mad Dog" Madill, it couldn't have been real...

Turns out, it was no joke. With the hated Quad City Mallards on the Kemper Arena ice tonight, Madill played a dozen or so shifts, showing that while his waist-line might have grown a bit and his hairline receded a bit more, the fire in his belly hadn't gone out. Madill played a handful of shifts, mostly on the power play, and made his presence known in a mammoth, Madillian manner.

Between a second period fight with Quad City's Troy Smith and a third period shoving match with fellow former Blade Marty Standish, Mad Dog amassed 21 penalty minutes. He received 2 minutes for instigating, 5 minutes for fighting, and a 10 minute misconduct for the tussle with Smith. Smith- at 26 full 13 years younger than Madill- took several shots to the head before falling to the ice and cowering in fear. At least one rinkside wag suggested that the 17 minutes assessed Madill in that skirmish were simply an act of kindness on the part of referee Brett Koslowski, allowing Madill ample time to catch his breath. Madill also picked up a 2 minute roughing call and a 2 minute delay of game call for tangling with Standish.

Unfortunately, Madill's performance remained the highlight of the evening. On a night when a passionate crowd raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Emilie Rosebud Diabetes Research Foundation, the Outlaws could have used some charity themselves.

Kansas City jumped to a first period lead on Jimmy Callahan's 13th goal of the season (Mike Murray, Matthieu Descoteaux). After that, it was almost All Duck, All The Time.

Quad City got first period goals from Standish, Patrick Nadeau, and Jason Lehoux, another in the second from Jason Deskins, and a capper in the third from Frantisk Skladany. The Outlaws managed a third period tally by Big George Davis (Jami Yoder), and had another third period goal disallowed. Quad City picks up the win, 5-2.

The Outlaws are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm against the Missouri River Otters. It's "Ladies Day" with the Outlaws, and the entertainment includes a wedding on the ice before the game. The first 1,000 ladies will receive Beauty Brands "glamour planners".
