Springfield Armor News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Springfield Armor today announced that head coach Bob MacKinnon has signed a contract extension with the organization. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released.
"Coach MacKinnon has done a great job with the Armor," said Brooklyn Nets' General Manager of Minor League Operations Milton Lee. "In year one in Springfield, our expectations were to establish a culture of professionalism, competitiveness and accountability both on and off the court . Coach MacKinnon took the lead and was able to create an extremely high standard of which we are very proud. The Nets and Armor management are looking forward to the upcoming 2012-13 season."
MacKinnon returns for his second season in Springfield after directing the greatest single-season turnaround in NBA Development League history in his first season with the Armor. The Armor compiled a 29-21 record during the 2011-12 regular season, a league-record 16-win improvement over the 2010-11 season. The Armor captured the league's Eastern Division championship and earned the franchise's first-ever playoff berth under MacKinnon's direction. The 2011-12 Armor had three players earn a total of four GATORADE NBA Call-Ups, including Dennis Horner (New Jersey Nets, twice), Jeff Foote (New Orleans Hornets) and Jerry Smith (New Jersey Nets).
"I am very excited to once again be a part of the Brooklyn Nets' organization as the head coach of the Springfield Armor," said MacKinnon. "It is a privilege to coach in Avery Johnson's system and for the city of Springfield. I'm looking forward to providing our great fans with more exciting times and memories!"
The 2012-13 season will be MacKinnon's fourth as a head coach in the NBA D-League. MacKinnon owns a career NBA D-League coaching record of 93-64 (.592) and has earned two division championships, as well as the 2008-09 NBA D-League championship with the now-defunct Colorado 14ers. Seven of MacKinnon's players have earned a total of 11 GATORADE NBA Call-Ups in his three seasons at the helm of the 14ers, the Idaho Stampede and the Armor.
Prior to his coaching stints in the NBA D-League, MacKinnon spent more than 25 years coaching and scouting on the collegiate and professional levels.
Assistant coach Chris Carrawell and athletic trainer Mark Mahoney have also finalized contract extensions and will return to Springfield for the 2012-13 season.
