Chicago Machine News Release
On an unusually chilly Saturday night in June, the Chicago Machine played the first three periods the best they've done all season, but came up short in the fourth and overtime as the Philadelphia Barrage continued their unbeaten campaign with a thrilling 13-12 come-from-behind win in the extra period.
It didn't take long for the Machine to get their offense on the right track. Former Barrage player, midfielder Doug Shanahan, scored the game's first goal only 10 seconds into the match. Three minutes later, attacker Scott Dooley got on the score sheet for the first time this season with a blistering shot going across the goal crease. The third and final goal of the period came off of midfielder Dan Paccione, scoring on a quick wrist shot after zipping along the right side of the Philly defense. Coming off of a shaky experience in net last week, goalie Mike Gabel managed to redeem himself in the opening period, shutting out the Barrage thanks to some nifty saves, a few lucky shots hitting the posts, and a feisty Machine defense.
The second period started with another quick Chicago goal, this time at the 39-second mark by midfielder Steve Dusseau, his third of the season. But the Barrage broke their scoring drought with Jed Prosser's ninth goal of the year. The Machine still had the hot hand as another former Philly player, Chris Malone, scored the next two goals, the second assisted by Scott Dooley (his first point of the year). Stephen Brundage tallied his first goal of 2006 in spectacular fashion, pulling off a Superman move while flinging the ball into the net in midair before coming to earth. Half a minute later, Sean Morris continued his whirlwind rookie campaign with his third career goal. Brundage added an assist to his tally sheet on Kevin Leveille's eighth goal of the season, as the Machine ended the best first half in team history with a 9-3 lead.
Leveille opened up the second half as he closed out the first with a low bouncer of a goal. Morris, with a Barrage defender hitting him all the way, still put the ball on net for his second goal of the night. But a goalie interference penalty called on Leveille enabled the Barrage to jump back into the game. With the Machine a man down, two-point goal specialist Roy Colsey lived up to his reputation by ripping a two-pointer from beyond the top of the arc. After another Philly goal due to a Leveille penalty, the Machine roared back on Dusseau's second goal of the game. Colsey figured in the next Barrage goal, as his shot bounced off Gabel into the waiting mesh of B.J. Prager, who simply flipped the ball into the open net.
Though the Machine held a five-point lead going into the fourth, the Philly attack finally came to life. The Barrage scored five straight goals to tie the game - two by Prager, including a classic give-and-go with Justin Smith, flipping the ball into the net in one fluid shot - and the teams traded a few point blank shots, with neither side able to break the deadlock in regulation.
Sadly, it didn't take long for the outcome of the Machine's most exciting game to be decided. Barrage midfielder, Jack deVilliers, won the crucial opening face off, and racked up a hat trick to end the game 13-12.
