Mississippi Braves News Release
Jackson, TN - The Jackson Generals had a record-setting night on Wednesday, breaking the Southern League record for doubles in a game en route to defeating the Mississippi Braves 16-6 at Pringles Park.
Zeke Spruill struggled through 3.1 innings, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on ten hits. Eight of the 10 hits went for extra bases as the Generals (12-8, 54-36) grew a 9-0 lead through four.
The Braves (8-12, 38-52) burst back into the game in the top of the sixth inning with six runs, chasing Brandon Maurer as the first six men reached and scored off the right-hander. Maurer had only allowed one hit through the first five innings, but the Braves finally broke through in the sixth. Former Brave Moises Hernandez came on and allowed a sixth run as the Braves pulled to within 9-6.
The Generals weren't deterred. They came back in the bottom of the sixth and scored five more times off of Andrew Wilson, pulling away to a 14-6 lead. In all, 21 hitters came to the plate for 11 runs in the sixth inning combined.
The Braves didn't have another comeback in them. Jackson scored twice more in the eighth to put the game away 16-6.
Maurer picked up his sixth win of the year, Spruill his ninth loss.
The Generals' 11 doubles broke the Southern League record for doubles in a game, set in 2000 by the Jacksonville Suns. Their 13 extra base hits tied the league record, last done in 2008 by the Huntsville Stars. The combined 12 doubles tied the league mark for most combined doubles in a contest.
Mississippi was led at the plate by Joe Leonard, who had two hits including a double in growing his hit streak to five games. Joey Terdoslavich extended his team-high hit streak to six games with his two-hit night. Todd Cunningham also provided two hits for the Braves.
The Braves and Generals battle in game two of a three-game series on Thursday night at Pringles Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM CT. RHP David Hale (6-4, 3.18 ERA) takes on Generals RHP Forrest Snow (1-3, 4.44). Listen live on 103.9 FM WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com beginning with the Vicksburg Toyota "Countdown to First Pitch" at 6:30 PM.
