Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (14-18) completed a sweep of the Chattanooga Lookouts (14-18) with a 10-5 win on Sunday afternoon at Trustmark Park. The five-game sweep is the M-Braves first sweep since completing a six-game sweep of Rocket City on July 17, 2022.
The M-Braves exploded for six runs in the fifth and scored all 10 runs in final four innings at the plate. Cade Bunnell hit a grand slam over the visiting bullpen to cap off the fifth inning rally. The M-Braves racked up 14 hits with seven players reaching base at least twice.
RHP Alan Rangel went five innings, allowing one run. The right-hander struck out a season-high 10 batters in his first win of the season.
Allan Cerda homered to left to put Chattanooga up 1-0 in the third.
Drew Campbell doubled to start the fifth and scored on a throwing error later in the inning to tie the game at 1-1. Cal Conley scored on a wild pitch to give the M-Braves a 2-1 lead. Bunnell then crushed a ball over the right-field bullpen for a grand slam, making it 6-1. The grand slam was Bunnell's second as an M-Brave. The infielder hit on at Regions Field in Birmingham on August 25, 2022.
Bunnell went 4-for-5 with a grand slam and three singles. Bunnell is batting .223 with three home runs and 15 RBI in 28 games. Bunnell celebrated his birthday today.
Conley reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with two base hits, a walk and two runs. Campbell went 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
After the Lookouts scored two in the top of the sixth, the M-Braves answered with two of their own. Justin Dean and Javier Valdes each doubled in a run in the inning to make it 8-3.
Valdes shined on both sides, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a walk. The catcher caught two runners stealing, including catching a runner at second base for the final out.
Chattanooga scored two runs in the eighth to pull within three runs. The M-Braves answered again. Landon Stephens smacked a two-run homer to the home bullpen in left field to make it 10-5, his fourth home run of the season.
Victor Vodnik picked up his second save, recording the final four outs of the game.
The M-Braves have a scheduled off day tomorrow before a six-game road series against Montgomery. The club returns to Trustmark Park from May 23-28 against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
