Mississippi Braves News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - The Mississippi Braves jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Independence Day and never looked back in a 6-2 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits at Riverwalk Stadium. The M-Braves head home with a 32-22 record, one game back of Pensacola, whom they'll face beginning on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park.
The victory gave Bryce Elder his first Double-A win on the mound. The fifth-rounder by the Braves in 2020 out of Texas didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and finished the outing with 5.0 innings of one-run ball, on two hits, walking two and striking out five in his second M-Braves start.
The M-Braves jumped out to a 1-0 lead for the fourth-straight game thanks to another Wendell Rijo homer. The 25-year-old led off Thursday's game with a long ball, and his seventh on the season was his fifth in his last 13 games.
The Braves sent nine batters to the plate against reliever Peyton Battenfield in the third inning and scored three runs to take a 4-0 lead for the second straight day. Jefrey Ramos reached on an error to begin the inning and then went to third on a double by Greyson Jenista. Tyler Neslony brought home Ramos with a single to right, and it was 2-0. After a walk to Rijo, Drew Lugbauer hit a sacrifice fly scoring Jenista. An RBI single from Shea Langeliers capped the inning to make it 4-0.
Montgomery (25-27) cut the lead to 4-1 in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly by Seaver Whalen. Elder pitched around two singles and a walk to minimize the damage.
The Biscuits trimmed the lead to 4-2 on a solo homer by Ruben Cardenas in the seventh inning.
Brooks Wilson, Brandon White, and Troy Bacon all earned holds and kept the Biscuits at two runs for the rest of the game.
The M-Braves added an insurance run in the eighth inning on an RBI double by Braden Shewmake to stretch the lead to 5-2. Shewmake was 1-for-4 and extended his team-best hitting streak to nine games. Neslony and Ramos hit doubles in the ninth to push it out to 6-2.
Daysbel Hernandez worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure the save. On offense, four of the M-Braves' nine hits were doubles, while Langeliers and Neslony had multi-hit games.
The Braves will have Monday off, before returning to action on Tuesday at Trustmark Park against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, to start a six-game series. The M-Braves and Wahoos have to best two records in the Double-A South. RHP Spencer Strider (0-1, 5.40) makes the start for Mississippi, against RHP Edward Cabrera (1-0, 1.17) for the Blue Wahoos. The first pitch is set for 6:05 pm with coverage on 103.9 WYAB, mississippibraves.com, and MiLB.tv.
Tuesday night is Bark in the Park, presented by Hollywood Feed. For tickets, and information on upcoming promotions, visit mississippibraves.com, or call 888-BRAVES4.
