THE HILLCATS: The Hillcats lost to the Carolina Mudcats 4-2 last night...Early rain led to a 31-minute delay prior to the first pitch...The rain returned after the eighth inning...The game was called after a 34-minute delay...The Hillcats collected nine hits...LF Dan Brewer had two hits in his first game as a Hillcat...LHP Mike Rayl (6-7) earned the win for Carolina giving up two runs in six innings....RHP Aaron Northcraft (8-7) gave up four runs in five innings, all with two outs, and took the loss...The Hillcats are now 14-15 in the second half and are in second place in the Northern Division...
VS. CAROLINA: Lynchburg is 4-9 against the Mudcats this year...The Hillcats haven't visited Five County Stadium since April 23-26, when they lost three out of four...They are now 1-6 in Zebulon, NC...The Mudcats gave Lynchburg six of their first 11 losses of the season taking each of the four-game sets 3-1 in the first four weeks of the season...The Hillcats won the only three-game set 2-1 back in Lynchburg June 11-13...The Mudcat win June 13 was the Hillcats only loss in the last 10 games of the first half...
HOME SICK: The Hillcats came to Carolina after losing three of four in Potomac, and are now 1-5 on their current road trip after losing the past two nights to the Mudcats...Lynchburg still hasn't won a road-series in the second half...They lost two of three in Wilmington June 28-30 and in Winston-Salem July 7-9...They split two games in Salem July 11-12 as part of a home and home four-game set...They are 4-9 on the road since the All-Star Break, after sweeping the Frederick Keys in Frederick in four games to end the first half...On the year they are 23-25 on the road...
IS THERE SOMETHING IN THE WATER: Lynchburg now has five players on the disabled list...OF Matt Lipka, 2B Tommy La Stella, RHP Juan Jamie, LHP Chris Masters, and 1B Chris Garcia... To fill the roster they have acquired one player via trade and another from the free agent pool (see below), and they just brought RHP Andrew Wilson back from Double-A Mississippi...
HIGHS AND LOWS: The Hillcats were blanked 3-0 Friday night...It was the fifth time they've been shut out in the second half already surpassing the four times they went scoreless in the first half still 42 games to play...The team has also put up double-digit run totals four times in the latter half, a feat they only accomplished three times in the first half...The 'Cats are now 8-9 in shutout games...Only Myrtle Beach (11-9) and Wilmington (7-11) have played in more such games...
TRY OUR NEW BREW: OF Dan Brewer went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored last night in his Hilcats debut...Brewer was acquired in a trade with the New York Yankees this week...He started the season with Double-A Trenton where he was hitting .221 through May 22...He missed over seven weeks after that before returning to action with the Gulf Coast League Yankees on July 10...Traded and assigned to Lynchburg July 20...Brewer was originally drafted by the Yankees in the eighth round in 2008 out of Bradley University where he was the first player to hit 20 or more homers and steal 40 or more bases in his career as a Bradley Brave...Played at four levels last season including 46 games with Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre, where he hit .278...
SPIN-A NEW WEB: 1B Michael Spina went 1-3 in his Hillcats debut last night...Spina was released by the Oakland Athletics this year after hitting just .176 through 70 games with Double-A Midland...Spina was originally drafted by the Athletics in the 11th round in 2009...Hit .282 with 10 home runs and 75 RBI in 2011 with Midland and was a Mid-season All-Star...
RELIEVED TO BE IN THE PEN: RHP Ryan Weber made his return to the Hillcats bullpen Friday night tossing two and two-thirds scoreless innings without allowing a hit...He now owns a 2.13 ERA in nine Lynchburg appearances...Was just recalled from Low-A Rome where he posted a 1.98 ERA in five relief outings, but a 6.79 ERA in 11 starts...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Micheal Goodnight was selected in the 13th round in 2010 out of the University of Houston...Went 0-2 with a 4.05 ERA in four starts with Short-season A Mahoning Valley in his rookie season...Moved up to Low-A Lake County in 2011...Went 5-12 with a 4.15 ERA in 27 starts...Named to the Midwest League All-Star Team...Finished third in batting average against (.219), third in starts (27), and 12th in strikeouts (117) in the league...Earned a call-up to Hi-A Kinston (2011 Hi-A Cleveland Affiliate)...Made one start against the Potomac Nationals...Went five and one-third innings, gave up one run, earned, on three hits and struck out six en route to the win...Also hit two batters...This season he is 2-8 with a 4.54 ERA through 19 appearances, 18 starts...Has struck out 67 and walked 47 in 101.2 innings...Leads the league in walks...His 11 wild pitches are one shy of the most in the league...At Houston, named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team in 2009, after going 5-5, with a 4.43 ERA and striking out 58 in 65 innings...
