THE HILLCATS: Last night Lynchburg fell 8-7 in ten innings at Frederick...The Hillcats had their four-game winning streak snapped, but still took two out of three from the Keys...Tonight they play the series opener of their set with at Salem and the fourth game of six straight on the road...The Cats are beginning a stretch of 14 out of 17 on the road...
VS. SALEM: The Hillcats are 8-9 against the Red Sox thus far this season and are 2-5 at City Stadium...The Cats went 10-10 against the Sox in the 460 series last season and were 5-5 at Lewis Gale Field...In the post-season the Cats swept the Sox three games to none in the Mills Cup Championship...In the all-time series Salem leads 163-145 during the regular season...
AN OUT AWAY: Lynchburg trailed by three runs in the ninth inning last night and were down to there final out before they rallied to tie the game at five a piece...After taking the lead with two runs in the top of the tenth, the Hillcats were an out away from the win before the Keys tied the game and then won the game in the bottom of the tenth...With a win the Cats would have earned their first road sweep of the season and matched their longest winning streak of the season with a fifth straight victory...
BECOMING THE HUNTER: RHP Brock Huntzinger gave up three runs in five and 2/3 innings last Saturday night for Salem...Despite coming one out shy of a quality start, the right-hander took the loss which was his third this season against the Hillcats...The Reds Sox starter is now 0-3 with a 6.48 ERA in five starts against the Cats this season...Against the rest of the Carolina League the mid-season All-Star selection is 7-3 with a 2.67 earned run average...
JAMMIN' JEFFORDS: Last night RHP Jeff Jeffords worked a scoreless seventh inning...The right-hander has not given up a run in his last seven outings, covering 11 and 1/3 innings of action, the longest current streak on the team...Jeffords ERA in April was 13.50, in May 5.56, in June 2.08 and he is yet to give up a run in July...Since the end of MAy he has lowered his ERA from 7.88 to 3.79 and only given up three earned runs in 24 and 1/3 innings of work...
DENIS THE MENACE: OF Denis Phipps went 1-for-4 with a pair of runs and a walk last night...When he homered in the third inning on Monday night, it gave the center fielder a hit in seven straight at-bats, matching the longest streak in Hillcats history (OF Pedro Powell, 2004)...Phipps is now riding an 11-game hitting-streak and over that time he is batting .429 (18-for-42) with six doubles, a triple, four home runs, 12 RBI, 12 runs scored, six walks and three steals...In 14 games with Lynchburg since coming down from Double-A Carolina the outfielder is batting .396 (21-for-53) with five home runs and 14 RBI...Last Thursday night he homered on his 25th birthday to give him a homer in three straight games, becoming the first Hillcat to accomplish the feat this season...
A RARE RUN: RHP Justin Freeman gave up a run in two innings of work last night...It snapped a streak of 16 and 1/3 consecutive scoreless frames, which passing the longest scoreless streak by a Hillcat this season (RHP Nick Christiani, 5/11-6/8, 15.1 ip)...Over that time his ERA dropped from 4.60 to 3.02...The right-hander is first in the league in games pitched (39), tied for second in games finished (26), tied for second in holds (7), first in fewest walks per nine innings (1.13) and third in fewest base runners per nine innings amongst relievers (9.82)...Freeman is also second on the team with seven saves...In April his ERA was 7.88, in May it was 3.07, in June it dropped to 2.40...
HURRAY FOR DAY: OF Kyle Day went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored last night and has now hit in a season-high 14 straight games, which has now passed the longest streak by a Hillcat this season (OF Josh Fellhauer and INF Alex Buchholz both hit in 11 straight)...In those 14 games he is batting .400 (22-for-55)...Over a longer stretch he has hit in 22 of his last 24 games and over that time he is 34-for-85 (.400) with five doubles, a triple, two home runs (including a grand slam), 17 RBI, 13 runs scored, seven walks and three steals...In those 24 contests Day has raised his average from .226 to .285...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Brock Huntzinger was selected by the Red Sox in the third round of the 2007 draft out of high school in Indiana...That same year he worked four games (three starts) for the GCL Red Sox and went 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA...The next year he pitched for both Short Season Low-A Lowell and full season Low-A Greenville...With Lowell he went 5-0 with a 0.64 ERA and with Greenville he had a 2-3 mark with a 7.09 ERA...Last season he returned to Greenville where he had a 10-9 record with a 4.09 ERA in 25 starts with the Drive...This season he has made 19 starts for Salem and has gone 7-6 with a 3.59 ERA...Huntzinger has made five starts against Lynchburg this season, going a combined 0-3 with a 6.48 ERA (18 earned runs in 25 innings)...Huntzinger, who was named a mid-season Carolina League All-Star, is 7-3 with a 2.67 ERA...
