LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg Hillcats and the Virginia Treasury's Unclaimed Property Program are pleased to announce that a combined partnership between both organizations has resulted in a one-day record in community outreach for the Treasury, with a total of $2,226,888 returned to people in the Lynchburg area on August 29. Fans were invited to claim their money while the Hillcats hosted the Carolina Mudcats at Lynchburg City Stadium that night.

The huge final total was brought about after a last-minute arrangement between the Hillcats and the Treasury as the 2013 regular season drew to a close. Working in conjunction with the Hillcats staff, officials from the Treasury were able to prepare a number of Hillcats fans' claims in advance, helping boost the final totals to over $400,000 in cash and over $1.8 million in stocks and other investments.

"Based on our records, this is the largest one-day result we've ever seen," said Vicki Bridgeman, the Director of the Virginia Unclaimed Property Program. "We've had a phenomenal summer partnering with baseball teams across Virginia, but results like this are absolutely incredible. A lot of these games have resulted in totals of $30,000 or even several hundred thousand, but to turn out more than $2 million is absolutely unprecedented."

"The Lynchburg Hillcats were more than pleased to have Unclaimed Property set up a table at our baseball game," said Paul Sunwall, General Manager of the Hillcats. "It was a great night and a lot of people were rewarded with payouts in a big way. We can't wait to have them out again next year!

The Unclaimed Property Program is already working to process the claims as quickly as possible, with an average turnaround time of about 30 days.

"We have a dedicated staff of claims representatives standing by to process the returns from this game," explained Bridgeman. "It's important to us that we follow through as fast as possible and get this money back to its rightful owners."

The Virginia Unclaimed Property Program is administered by the Virginia Department of the Treasury. An estimated one in four Virginians currently has unclaimed property and the Commonwealth is currently holding more than $1.2 billion waiting to be claimed. They made the playoffs for a second consecutive season by winning the Northern Division Wild Card, but were eliminated from the postseason Thursday, September 5.
