PEARL, MS -- Utility i nfielder Omar Luna was signed by the Atlanta Braves out of the American Association Independent League and assigned to Double-A Mississippi Saturday, June 22. In 13 games, Luna was leading the El Paso Diablos with a .360 batting average.

Luna, 26, began the season in the Los Angeles Dodgers system with Double-A Chattanooga. He hit .170 in 29 games for the Lookouts before being released in mid-May. A native of the Dominican Republic, Luna was originally signed as a free agent by the Tampa Bay Rays on May 3, 2006. He debuted with R-Princeton in 2007 where he was named Player of the Year after leading the team in batting average (.289) and hits (67). He spent six years in the Rays system and had stints with Triple-A Durham in 2010 and 2011. Luna was selected as a Southern League All-Star last season and named Best Utility Player in the league after posting a .315 batting average with Double-A Montgomery.
