Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, Mich. - The Muskegon Lumberjacks will continue their nine-game road trip by commencing a pro-style, three-in-three gauntlet in three different cities. The Jacks will be in Dubuque, Iowa on Friday, April 8 for an 8:05 pm EDT faceoff against the Fighting Saints. Following that, Muskegon flocks south to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday, April 9 for a matchup with the RoughRiders at 8:05 pm EDT. Finally, the Lumberjacks will cap off the weekend in Green Bay, Wisc. for a matinee game against the Gamblers on Sunday, April 8 at 4:05 pm EDT. This series becomes the second consecutive three-in-three series for Muskegon and the first time they play three teams in three different cities in three consecutive days.
Masterpiece on the Mississippi
The Dubuque Fighting Saints come into this weekend just nine points ahead of the Lumberjacks in the Eastern Conference standings with an overall record of 34-16-2-3, good for second place in the standings with 73 points. Two of the top three leading scorers in the entire USHL resided on Dubuque's roster, those being leading scorer Stephen Halliday (31-50-81) and Connor Kurth (30-42-72). The Saints are 7-3-0-0 in their last 10 games, most recently sweeping the weekend in single-game matchups with the Des Moines Buccaneers and Waterloo Black Hawks.
The City of Five Seasons
The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders are currently on the outside of the playoff picture, slotted into seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings with 53 points and an overall record of 25-27-2-1. While Adam Flammang leads the team in points, (24-18-42), most of the attention is focused on the penalty box, where Joe Fleming leads the league in PIMS with a whopping 179 penalty minutes. Last weekend, the Riders took two out of three against Waterloo, Des Moines, and Team USA U18. In Sunday's matchup against the 18's, both teams piled up a combined 250 PIMS. Cedar Rapids will host Youngstown on April 8 before welcoming the Lumberjacks the following night.
America's Dairyland
Like the RoughRiders, the Green Bay Gamblers are also outside of a playoff spot, currently sitting in last place in the Eastern Conference standings, with an overall record of 22-29-3-1 and 48 points. After a trade-deadline firesale saw the Gamblers lose their top scorer and best defenseman, Ryan Greene (18-29-47) and Cam Lund (22-22-44) remain as the Gamblers' top offensive threats. Since splitting with Muskegon to close out the month of March, the Gamblers have lost three straight but will take on top-seeded Chicago on April 8 and 9 before hosting Muskegon on Sunday to close out the three-in-three for both squads.
About Last Weekend
The Lumberjacks began the April gauntlet with a three-in-three series with the Youngstown Phantoms last weekend, coming away with two points. The Phantoms took games one and two by a final score of 6-to-3 on Friday and 4-to-3 on Saturday, but the Jacks responded with a 4-to-1 victory on Sunday. After taking one game in the three-in-three with Y-Town, Muskegon stays put in third place in the Eastern Conference standings with an overall record of 29-20-3-3 and 64 points, nine points behind Dubuque (74 points, second place), 13 points behind Chicago (74 points, first place), but only three in front of Youngstown (61 points, fourth place) and eight ahead of Madison (56 points, fifth place).
On the Road Again
After sitting at home for six consecutive games, the Lumberjacks are in the middle of a nine-game road trip, by far the longest of the season. Before this current road swing, the longest road trip for the Lumberjacks this season was four games, which Muskegon has accomplished twice already this year. This long road stand is now the second-longest road trip in franchise history, with the current record still standing at 10-consecutive road games, which was set to begin the 2020-21 season where the Lumberjacks were on the road from Nov. 6 through Dec. 16.
Record Tracker
Lumberjacks captain Jack Williams (110 career points) is now fourth all-time in points in Muskegon Lumberjacks history, with fellow teammate Quinn Hutson (108 career points) right behind him for fifth all-time in points. Both players recently passed Mikael Hakkarainen (107 career points), but sit just behind Collin Adams (112 career points), Matej Paulovic (119 career points), and Daniil Gushchin (147 career points) on the all-time leader list for most points in franchise history.
Eyes on the Century Men
Five current Lumberjacks have played at least 100 career USHL games, those being captain Jack Williams (161 games), Noah Ellis (149 games), Tyler Dunbar (134 games), Jacob Guevin (112 games), and Jake Braccini (108 games). On the radar for 100 career games are Phil Tresca (99 games), Quinn Hutson (98 games), and Owen Mehlenbacher (96 games), all of whom are due to hit the century mark this season. In addition to games played, Quinn Hutson (108 points), and Jack Williams (110 points) became the seventh and eighth players in franchise history, respectively, to score at least 100 career points. Jacob Guevin (94 career points) would need only six more points to become the third Lumberjack this season to hit triple digits, and the ninth player in franchise history to do so.
