Charleston Lowgators News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (March 19) –The North Charleston Lowgators fought off the Greenville Groove 95-91 at the North Charleston Coliseum on Wednesday night to clinch a berth in the 2003 NBDL playoffs.

The Lowgators were up by as many as 13 and controlled the glass all evening out-rebounding the Groove 49-35. Greenville cut their deficit to two a couple of times in the fourth period, but that would be as close as they would get. North Charleston had lost their last four home games.

Lowgators coach Doug Marty said, “This has been a trying week for our team. It was gut check time tonight and we came out with intensity and played team basketball. It is nice to know we’re in the playoffs.”

The Lowgator shuffled their starting lineup and it paid dividends. Karim Shabazz started at center and pulled down 20 rebounds. Ime Udoka picked up the start and had 16 points, while Corey Benjamin popped in 22 points off the bench. Tierre Brown continued his hot play with a game-high 27 points.

The Groove were led by Fred Williams’ 18 points and 10 rebounds. Tory Walker added 17 points.

The Lowgators (25-24) will wrap up the regular season at Huntsville on Saturday night. Greenville (21-27) is at Fayetteville on Friday evening.
