Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
LOWELL, MA --- Carlos De La Cruz, Heriberto Guzman and Salvador Paniagua combined to go 7-for-13 with four runs, a double, three homers and four RBI to lead the Lowell Spinners to an 11-1 blowout victory over the Vermont Expos in New York-Penn League action Saturday evening at LeLacheur Park.
Guzman got the scoring started with a leadoff home run in the second inning off Expos starter Jon Felfoldi (1-3), who allowed five runs on six hits over three-plus innings to take the loss. Felfoldi had not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his first six starts (eight earned runs total in 34.2 innings).
Paniagua doubled home a run and then scored on a Dee Williams single for a three-run second inning. The Spinners added four more runs in the fourth as Felfoldi allowed a single and walk before being relieved by David Trahan, who allowed two walks and two singles in the inning to give Lowell a 7-0 lead.
De La Cruz hit a solo home run off Hector Cerezo in the sixth inning before Paniagua hit a three-run homer off Ben Cox in the seventh inning for a 11-0 Spinners lead.
The Expos offense was non-existent over the first seven innings as Vermont had just a two-out single from Doug Vroman in the second inning to go along with six walks. Lowell starter Anibal Sanchez walked three and struckout eight over the first four innings, while Matt Goodson had three walks and two strikeouts in three innings of relief for the victory.
Vermont got a one-out single from Ofilio Castro in the eighth inning off reliever Cooper Eddy, then scored their only run of the game in the ninth on a leadoff double from Maurice Cobb and a one-out RBI single from Duron Legrande. The single for Legrande snapped an 0-for-29 slump.
The 11 runs tied a season-high for runs allowed by the Expos, who had also given up 11 runs to Lowell on June 22nd. Vermont has now allowed 30 runs over the last four games despite a shutout victory over Brooklyn on July 21st. The Expos gave up 10 runs to Brooklyn on July 20th and nine runs at Lowell on Friday night before the 11 runs on Saturday.
The Expos offense has just seven hits over the first two games of the three-game series at Lowell, lowering the team to a season-low .240 batting average. Since scoring 11 runs on 14 hits in an 11-7 victory at Lowell on July 16th, Vermont is hitting .200 (46-for-230) with 21 runs scored over the last seven games.
The finale of the three-game series between the Expos and Spinners starts at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday with Chris Goodman on the mound for Vermont (16-19), which returns home to Centennial Field for a two-game series with the Oneonta Tigers beginning on Monday night.
