Louisville Erupts for Four Run Third, Five Run Fourth in 9-2 Win

Louisville, KY - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre had lost 14 of 20 series opening games on the season heading into the first of four against the Louisville Bats at Louisville Slugger Field. Things looked good early on as the Yankees got out to a 2-0 lead through the first two innings of the game before the Bats jumped on Yankees pitching for four runs in the third and five in the fourth picking up a 9-2 win and handing the Yankees their 15th series opening game loss.

The Yankees picked up early runs scoring single runs in each of the first and second inning off Louisville starter Sean Gallagher (WP, 6-4). With two down, Ronnier Mustelier worked a two out walk and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Jack Cust picked up his team best 41st RBI with a single to centerfield and the Yankees led 1-0. Colin Curtis made it 2-0 SWB in the second inning hitting his first homer of the season off Gallagher into the right field seats.

The Bats woke up in the third inning picking up four runs off Yankees starting pitcher John Maine (LP, 1-1) to take a 4-2 advantage. All of the runs against Maine were unearned as a leadoff error by SWB first baseman Russell Branyan on a ground ball hit by Joey Gathright came back to hurt the Yankees. After Gathright reached on the Branyan error, he scored on an RBI double from Paul Janish to cut the lead to 2-1. With one out and runners on the corners, Danny Dorn knocked in Janish with a sac fly to tie the game 2-2. Louisville took advantage of the extra out in the inning picking up three straight hits and scoring two more runs taking a 4-2 lead. Maine was lifted before the end of the inning and finished his night with 2.2 innings pitched, six hits, four runs, three walks, and three strikeouts.

Nelson Figueroa who replaced Maine in getting the final out of the third inning had a rough first inning pitching the fourth. Louisville added five more runs to their total running the score to 9-2, picking up a season high six hits in an inning against Yankees pitching. Costanzo drove in Janish who doubled for the second time on the night to make it a 5-2 game. Dorn doubled home Costanzo for a 6-2 Bats advantage. After Corky Miller flew out to left field for the second out of the inning Louisville picked up three straight two out RBI hits off Figueroa to run the lead to 9-2.

Gallagher lasted through the fifth inning to qualify for the win allowing five hits and two runs, both earned. The right hander walked four and struck out four in picking up his sixth win of the season.

The Yankees allowed a season high 16 hits, a season high six doubles and allowed a six hit fourth inning; the most hits in an inning by an opponent in 2012. SWB dropped to 40-31 with the loss and had their three game winning streak snapped with the loss. Louisville moved its overall mark to 23-49 with the win.

Game two of the four game series will be played Tuesday night at 7:05 PM at Louisville Slugger Field. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will send right hander Adam Warren (4-4, 4.12) to the mound while Louisville will counter with lefty Ryan Feierabend (0-1, 9.35).
