Louisville City FC starts play this week in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup that's smaller than in years past but offers the same prestigious prizes.

LouCity hosts Greenville Triumph SC at 7 p.m. Tuesday inside Lynn Family Stadium as part of U.S. Soccer's knockout national championship tournament.

This year, 96 teams are participating in the Open Cup, the product of Major League Soccer's much maligned reduced participation. According to U.S. Soccer, however, the federation is "making its largest-ever investment in the tournament in 2024."

In addition to increased travel incentives for teams, the winning Open Cup club will receive $300,000 in prize money and perhaps more importantly a berth in the 2025 Concacaf Champions League. The runner-up will earn $100,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will take home a $25,000 cash prize.

Greenville Triumph defeated fellow USL League One side One Knoxville SC in the Open Cup's Second Round to advance. LouCity is one of 16 USL Championship teams entering the competition for the Third Round. All other USL Championship teams and eight MLS teams will enter in the Round of 32 played from May 7-8.

The Round of 16 is set for May 21-22 before the Quarterfinal (July 9-10), Semifinal (August 27-28) and Final (September 25) rounds close out the competition.

Tickets for Tuesday's LouCity-Greenville game remain available by visiting LouCity.com or calling (502) LOU-CITY. Live streaming coverage will air at usopencup.com.

LouCity's form: The boys in purple will be looking to bounce back after suffering their only loss of the season so far last Tuesday away to the Charleston Battery. Prior to that, LouCity matched its best-ever start, opening 2024 with a 4-0 record. City has scored 16 goals for compared to just seven against, the product of a hot start by striker Wilson Harris, the first player to tally seven goals in four games to start a USL Championship season.

Know the foe: This marks the first meeting between LouCity and Greenville, a traditionally strong USL League One side. The Triumph have made the playoffs in each of their five seasons and won the 2020 league title. As with City, Greenville was unbeaten until its most-recent outing, a 1-0 loss Friday night to the Charlotte Independence. The Triumph are newly coached this season by Rick Wright and feature forward Lyam MacKinnon, who leads the side in goals (three), assists (one) and chances created (eight).

Chasing the Cup: LouCity won at least one Open Cup game in each of its previous six tries at the tournament, advancing as far as the quarterfinal round in 2018 thanks to a Fourth Round victory over MLS' New England Revolution. Last year, the boys in purple defeated local rival Lexington SC in a Second Round game before exiting the competition with a Third Round away loss to FC Cincinnati.
