LONG BEACH, Calif. â The Long Beach Jam defeated the Los Angeles Hoop All-Stars 193-130 in a preseason charity exhibition, which raised more than $1000 for the Southern California Basketball Academy's Academic Learning Center. The game took place at the Warrior Center in Cypress, Calif.
The Jam were led by Valencia, Calif. native, Bryan Finley, who scored 39 points. Former Cincinnati Bearcat and Atlanta Hawks star, DerMarr Johnson followed Finley with 31 points. Former USC forward, Jerry Dupree, added 30 points for the Jam.
The Southern California Basketball Academy's Academic Learning Center provides academic tutoring and counseling, SAT training, drug awareness programs, rape prevention and self-defense courses for SCBA participants ranging from third grade to high school. On Sunday, Nov. 16, Head Coach Paul Westhead and other Jam coaches and players will be at Millikan High School (Long Beach, Calif.) hosting both a coaches' clinic (12 â 1 p.m.) and a youth clinic (1 â 3 p.m.) for the Long Beach Chapter of the National Junior Basketball (NJB) organization. Preseason training camp continues Nov. 17-18 at the Lakewood YMCA. "It was an exciting first night of basketball in the history of our organization," says Jam President Steve Chase. "With Paul Westhead's style of play and the athleticism of our players, we could have a serious shot at scoring 200 multiple times this season. It was a pleasure to see so many kids at the game and to know that our organization helped raise money for a good cause."
The Jam head to Juarez, Mexico, for the season opener on Thursday, Nov. 20. The home opener against the Fresno HeatWave tips off Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Long Beach State Pyramid.
