Lakeland Loggerheads News Release
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Mr. Peter Young, President of Hockey Operations for the World Hockey Association 2 (WHA2) today announced that four players were drafted by the Lakeland Loggerheads this weekend during the free agent camp held in Kissimmee, Florida.
"The Loggerheads were able to pick up three good forwards and a quality goaltender as they start building a strong foundation for when the team begins play in late October." Young said.
Forwards Jim Black, Dan Odegard, Jay Pilgrim, and goaltender Scott Gouthro earned the right to join the Loggerheads at training camp in October as they embark on their first season in the WHA2.
Black, a six-foot-one, 200-pound right wing from Tuscaloosa, Alabama played three games with the ECHL Louisiana Gators in the 2001 - 2002 season. He had no points and five penalty minutes. The twenty-four year-old played 36 games for the Pelham Prowlers of the Southern Elite Hockey League in the 1999 - 2000 season scoring 10 goals and four assists with 89 penalty minutes.
"It was just a good feeling to see my name up on the list for Lakeland." Black said.
Twenty-three-year-old Odegard was second in scoring his senior year at Marian College collecting 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points in 27 games. The five-foot-ten, 190-pound forward hails from Oakdale, Minnesota.
"I came to camp expecting something." Odegard said. "I just didn't know which team I was going to."
Forward Pilgrim played in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League last season for the Charlottetown Abbies. The twenty-year-old is five-foot-eight, 180-pounds.

"I worked pretty hard this weekend." Pilgrim said. "It just felt good to be drafted."
Gouthro was a member of the Halifax Oland Exports, the first team from Nova Scotia to win the Canadian Junior A Hockey Championship. The six-foot-two, 185-pound, Bras D'Or native was named 2002 Royal Bank Awards top goalie.
"It's an honor to be invited to training camp." Gouthro said.
"I just wanted to impress the coaches and show them that I was able to play at that level. Now that I am invited to camp, I will have to work hard to show the Lakeland coach that I am ready to play at that level for the whole season."
The Lakeland Loggerheads will take the ice this October and face the Jacksonville Barracudas, Miami Manatees, Orlando Seals and a yet to be named Central Alabama team.
