UNIONDALE, NY -- The Long Island Lizards (4-4) defeated the Rochester Rattlers (4-4), 19-7, in front of 3,527 fans at Mitchel Athletic Complex on Saturday evening. Long Island scored the first three points of the game and never trailed, taking an early 6-1 lead. Austin Garrison was named Bud Light MVP, scoring four goals to lead the team in scoring. The win is the third straight for Long Island, who is now right back in the thick of the playoff race.
The Lizards led 10-2 at halftime, but Rochester scored four straight points to get back into the game. However, the Lizards responded with six consecutive points, and nine of the next ten goals, to put Rochester away.
The loss was the worst defeat ever suffered by the Rattlers in their six year franchise history.
Keith Cromwell (2 goals, 1 two-pointer, 2 assists), Chris Massey (2 goals, 1 assist) and Blake Miller (2 goals were also impressive on the teams offense. Adam Borcz scored a two-point goal as well.
Pete Vlahakis had another impressive day in the faceoff circle, winning 16 of 25 draws. Greg Cattrano earned the win in goal with 11 saves.
However, the Lizards defense was the story, as Pat McCabe, John Gagliardi and Nicky Polanco held Rochester's dangerous attack at bay through the entire game. John Grant was held to only one goal, while first-overall draft pick Joe Walters was held scoreless.
The Lizards have one week off before meeting the Philadelphia Barrage at Villanova Stadium on Thursday, July 20th.
