Boston Cannons News Release
The reunion with former Cannons head coach Scott Hiller did not go as the Cannons would have liked. Hiller's Baltimore Bayhawks beat-up Boston 19-12 at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the campus of Towson University. The Bayhawks took their first lead 3:16 into the first quarter and never relinquished it.
Hiller, who now coaches the Bayhawks, earned his first victory against his former team. Baltimore improves to 3-5 while Boston drops to 6-2.
"We did not play up to our standards today," said Bill Daye, Cannons head coach. "Baltimore has a very dangerous team and some very talented young players."
One of those talented young players is rookie netminder Matt Russell. Starting his first career MLL game Russell stole the show making 25 saves and backboning his team to victory.
Another young player getting it done for the Bayhawks was rookie Matt Ward. Ward earned Bud Light MVP honors scoring 6 goals and recording 3 assists.
The Cannons trailed by three heading at the half. The third and fourth quarters were all Baltimore. The Bayhawks outscored the Cannons 10-6 in the second half. Boston cut Baltimore's lead to 9-7 after a Brett Bucktooth goal 51 seconds into the third quarter.
But Baltimore rookie Bill McGlone drilled a two-point goal 15 seconds later and Baltimore never looked back.
Matt Poskay and Conor Gill led the way on the score sheet for the Cannons. Poskay netted a career high 5 goals. Gill scored three times and added two assists. David Evans had 2 goals and 2 assists while John Christmas notched 3 assists.
In addition to Ward's 9 points Baltimore had two other players with 6 points. Former Cannon Mark Millon scored 4 goals and recorded 2 assists. McGlone had 5 goals including his two-pointer, good for 6 points as well.
Baltimore set the tone for the game in the first half.
The first quarter began promising for Boston. Poskay netted a brilliant behind the back goal 1:44 into the game on a pass from Gill. After that first tally however the Cannons went over 13:00 with out a point. In that time the Bayhawks scored six unanswered goals, three by McGlone. Gill scored the final goal of the quarter ending Boston's drought.
The Cannons fired back to start the second quarter. Boston scored three straight goals. Poskay, Drew Pfarr and Gill each connected during the run. The Bayhawks responded with three consecutive goals of their own. Gill closed the first half with a goal with 1:05 left in the quarter. The half ended with Baltimore leading 9-6.
The MLL bye week is next on the schedule. Boston plays again on July 22 at home against the Rochester Rattlers at 7:00PM.
