Columbus Lions News Release
(Columbus)- The Columbus Lions of the Southern Indoor Football League are proud to announce the signing of three players who played collegiately in the state of Florida. The Lions signed defensive backs, Markihe Anderson and Wondy Pierre-Louis both from the University of Florida, and tight end Ben Busbee from the University of South Florida.
Wondy Pierre-Louis (6-1, 185 U. of Florida)- Wondy Pierre-Louis appeared in 52 games with the Gators amassing 71 tackles and 3 career interceptions. He won 2 NCAA National Championships while at UF, and started all 13 games at corner back in 2007. Pierre-Louis was a key contributor on special teams earning the spot as gunner his freshman year. Pierre-Louis attended workouts for the Giants and Ravens before signing with the Lions this December. He is a native of Haiti and also was a member of the UF track team.
Markihe Anderson (5-9, 180 U. of Florida)- Markihe appeared in 49 games for the Gators in his career collecting 63 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 interception. The Fort, Myers native had a career high 5 tackles in the 2008 Capital One Bowl versus Michigan, and recorded his lone interception in 2009 versus Tennessee. Markihe was invited to attend the 2010 Jaguars minicamp before inking his contract with the Lions.
Ben Busbee (6-4, 245 U. of South Florida)- Lined up collegiately as a tight end and will look to make the transition to either fullback or offensive line in the arena game. He was considered primarily a blocking tight end at USF despite hauling in 16 catches for 212 yards and 4 touchdowns during his career. The Mobile, AL native pulled in a remarkable catch against Louisville that head coach Jim Leavitt called the, "best he had ever seen." Busbee appeared in 49 career games with the Bulls raking him 10th all-time in participation. He most recently attended the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2010 mini-camp.
"I am elated to sign these guys to our defense. During the recruiting process I knew these were two guys that we needed to land. They bring great skill set to the defensive back position, as well as SEC and National Championship experience. They both have a great attitude and drive to win. I am looking forward to seeing Markihe and Wondy get in the mix early this season to help us repeat as champions," commented Kirk Broussard head of player personnel for the Columbus Lions.
"The talent level here in Columbus continues to rise above the standard. Obviously we try to recruit the best talent available but we also strive to recruit players with character according to the standards set by previous Lions players. Markihe, Wondy, and Ben fit that description and will definitely help us in our goal of repeating as SIFL Champions," added Head Coach Jason Gibson.
The 2010 SIFL Champion Columbus Lions will begin their title defense March 20th at Huntsville. The home opener is March 27th vs. Richmond Raiders, which leaves fans plenty of time to purchase their 2011 season tickets.ÃÂ To reserve yours today, contact the Lions front office at 706-322-3DEN (3336) or visit them on the web at www.columbuslions.net.
