Lions Land Hometown Talent Davis Sanchez

(Vancouver) The BC Lions Football Club announced late this afternoon that veteran defensive back Davis Sanchez has signed a contract with the team. In keeping with club, policy terms of each deal were not released.

Sanchez, a native of Delta, BC had spent the last four seasons with the Montreal Alouettes and is a nine-year CFL veteran who has appeared in 135 career games including 16 last season.

"Davis is a proven player in our league and gives us a number of options on defence," said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono.

Sanchez was a first round selection of the Alouettes in 1999 after a solid career at the University of Oregon. His penchant for big plays and lockdown coverage over two seasons earned him an NFL role with the San Diego Chargers in 2001 and 2002. He returned to the CFL in 2003 with the Calgary Stampeders and was traded back to the Als for the 2004 season. In 2005, the free agent defender who can play both corner and safety signed with the Edmonton Eskimos before returning to Montreal for his third and most recent stint with the Als.

"The Lions are the only team I wanted to play for this season," said Sanchez. "I have always respected this outstanding organization's quality of coaches and players and I know I'm part of team that will be very difficult to play against."

Sanchez was the East Division's Most Outstanding Canadian in 2000 as well as a CFL All-Star. He earned East Division All-Star status in 2000, 2004 and 2008. Davis will also bring some championship flavour to the Leos having been a part the Alouettes Grey Cup winning squad last November.
