Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) face the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks on Saturday in the last regular-season game against the National Conference, which features teams in the northern part of the league footprint. The Steelhawks come in on a three-game losing skid after a torrid 4-0 start to the season, while the Lions look to keep their 3-0 home record spotless with a win tomorrow.
Quarterbacks Danny O'Brien and Chris McCoy will be at the helm when the Lions hit the field tomorrow.
McCoy, the 2010 SIFL Most Valuable Player and playoff MVP in leading the Lions to their only league title, started the team's last game Sunday in Nashville. McCoy was 21 of 40 passing for 240 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions against the Venom, and also picked up a rushing touchdown.
O'Brien, meanwhile, was signed to the team earlier this week and will be in a Lions jersey for the first time on Saturday night. O'Brien comes highly touted as the ACC Rookie of the Year as a redshirt freshman quarterback for the University of Maryland in 2010. He lands in Columbus after a collegiate career not only with the Terrapins but with the University of Wisconsin and Division III Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Quarterback Antwon Young, who was at the helm of the Lions' offensive attack for their first six games before suffering an ACL injury, is out for the season.
Elsewhere on offense, running back Kendrick Perry looks to get back in the end zone after being shut out in a game for the first time all season in Nashville on Sunday. His 15 total touchdowns on the season are tied with Alabama's Mico McSwain for tops in the PIFL, while Perry's 294 rushing yards give him the league lead outright in yardage on the ground. Wide receiver Jarmon Fortson, who pulled down three receiving touchdowns on Sunday, is tied for fifth in the league with 12 touchdowns of his own on the season to date. Former Glenwood and Huntingdon College standout receiver Cody Pearcy will play in his first home game after making his Lions debut on Sunday. Pearcy had 64 receiving yards and a touchdown in the loss to the Venom.
Saturday's game is Family Night in the Jungle and also Youth Football Night. All of the teams in the Lions' Youth Indoor Football League will be honored on the field prior to the 7 PM EDT kickoff, and children 12 and under are admitted to the game free with the purchase of a full-price adult ticket. In addition, the Lions are offering a half-season ticket package for the remaining three home games for as low as $30.
Plenty of great seats are still available for the Lions' remaining home schedule, but to get the best seats for the upcoming trifecta of games, contact the Lions at 706.322.3336 or visit the Columbus Civic Center box office today. After Saturday, the Lions have two more games remaining at home on June 7 against the Alabama Hammers and June 14 against the Nashville Venom.
