Lions Can Clinch Regular Season Title Tonight

Columbus Lions News Release

COLUMBUS, GA, May 17 -- A win by the Daytona Beach Thunder tonight against the Augusta Spartans would mathematically guarantee the Columbus Lions first place in the World Indoor Football League's regular season and the right to host the World Indoor Bowl championship game the weekend of June 29-30.

WIFL Director of Communications Dan Ryan confirmed that a Thunder win would leave the Spartans with a 5-6 record, and in a situation where even if they won their last three games, and the Lions lost all four remaining games, the second tiebreaker (point differential in the Augusta-Columbus season series) would give the Lions the #1 seed and the right to host the title game. The teams split their four regular-season matchups, with the home team victorious in each game.

Tonight's game is at Augusta's James Brown Arena starting at 7:30 p.m. Webcast listeners can log into www.wifl.us and click on "Internetwork" for live play-by-play. Regardless of the outcome, the Lions have already clinched at least a #2 seed and the right to host the first-round playoff game (#3 at #2).
