Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, GA (May 27, 2015) - Fresh off a bye week, the Columbus Lions (6-2) of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) hope to avoid a late season discharge when they host the Erie Explosion (1-6) this Saturday May 30th on Cancer Awareness Night.
Chemistry is the study of matter, but as one former great fictional chemist Walter White explains "chemistry is more about the study of change....it is growth then decay, then transformation!"
That last line can best describe what each football team hopes to begin to accomplish towards this time of the football season. In the beginning of the season the team grows together during camp with the culmination being the first game, they experience high's and ultimately low's before finally hitting that transformation period that hopefully ends in championship glory.
Entering the final quarter of the regular season, the Lions are in first place this late in the season for the first time since the 2011 season currently placing the road to the 2015 PIFL Championship through Columbus. With an irregular amount of bye weeks in their schedule, on thing Coach Gibson hopes his squad doesn't lie down to the last place Explosion.
"There is a lot of football left to play and we can't let down at all against Erie,"Â says Gibson. "They have played hard each week and two weeks ago almost beat a very good Trenton team, they're hungry for their first PIFL win."
Still in search of their first league win, Erie's inaugural season in the PIFL has imploded with their only win coming in non-conference action. Boasting a resume that included back-to-back championship titles from 2013-2014, at the start of this season the Explosion experienced a major roster turnover from those championship teams as well as a number of mid-season injuries of which includes starting quarterback Jeff Sinclair who was placed on injured reserve earlier this month.
In Sinclair's place has been Mason Espinosa who nearly led Erie to their first league victory two weeks ago against Trenton only to complete just 5 of 18 second half passes as well as throwing an interception squandering a 15 point lead losing 50-47.
Off their emotional win in Nashville two weeks ago, Columbus is well rested and after this week's contest versus Erie will get to enjoy another bye week before ultimately closing out the regular season by hosting the Freedom on June 13th and traveling to Huntsville for the season finale the following week.
"I'd much rather be playing,"Â says Gibson. "Bye weeks are an important part of the season allowing players to heal and reprioritize, but sometimes too many layoffs can create rust and that's the last thing we want heading down the stretch."
Like Walter White, or how he would later be known as Heisenburg, said, 'It's all about the study of change, you're either the one who gets knocked down, or you're the one who does the knocking.' Come this Saturday the Lions could either play down to their opponent, or be the one who knocks.
Sponsored by Columbus Regional Healthcare and AFLAC, this Saturday is the annual Cancer Awareness Night. Columbus will be donning commemorative pink jersey's which will be sold for $50 with all the proceeds going to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta as well as the John B. Amos Cancer Center.
Some of Saturday's in-game festivities will include a special performance by Frankie Elliston, a magician who was a 2010 finalist on America's Got Talent.
For more information about how you can nab one of those pink jersey's or special group ticket information, contact the Lions front office at 706-322-3336.
