Lions Add Veteran to Offense

As the 2020 signing period moves along, the Columbus Lions are continuing to make moves to bolster the roster for the 2021 season. The Lions have re-signed quarterback Matt Foltz from Stonehill College. This name may be familiar to some Lions fans as Foltz came to Columbus for camp two years ago but ended up leaving to finish school. At the time, there was belief around the organization that Foltz could be the next starting quarterback to lead the Lions forward. Now Foltz has returned to Columbus for the 2021 season and looks to bring a new dimension to the offense.
Standing at 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighing in at around 230 pounds, Foltz does not look like the standard quarterback and his physicality can be an advantage for him at times. In his four years at Stonehill, Foltz had only 257 rushing yards but reached the end zone 14 times. His size and running ability are certainly worth mentioning, but it is his passing ability that makes him stand out.
The Lions' latest addition finished top ten in his career at Stonehill in every major passing category, including setting the record for highest career completion percentage, at 61.8 percent. The signal caller was at Stonehill for four years and became the full time starter in his sophomore season. In those four years, Foltz threw for 7300 yards and had 60 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. In 2017, Foltz began his senior season and it was the best of his collegiate career, specifically from an efficiency standpoint. Foltz set a career high completion percentage of 64.8 percent while throwing for a career high 2458 yards. He also threw 22 touchdown passes to just six interceptions. Foltz was named a National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame William V. Campbell Trophy Semifinalist as well as NE10 Academic All-Conference and received the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award.
"He has a big time arm and the arena game comes easy to him," said Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Jason Gibson. Foltz's arm talent was on clear display during his years at Stonehill. As for adjusting to the style of the arena game, Coach Gibson believes Foltz has already made a seamless transition. With Foltz' talent, and the confidence of Coach Gibson, fans should keep an eye on the young quarterback once training camp begins.
