"Linebacker U" Loses Two to AAFL Draft
January 28, 2008 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA)
Columbus Lions News Release
Columbus, GA- The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football League are proud to announce that linebacker Justin Rivers and running back Mahlon Carey were selected with the 191st and 266th pick by team Tennessee of the All American Football League.
The Lions are certainly not surprised that they lost both linebackers. Led by Rivers and Carey, the defense led the league in nearly every defensive category.
Rivers (6' 0" 250), out of Eastern Kentucky, led the league in forced fumbles, and blocked field goals, on his way to garnering first team all-WIFL honors. "Justin was a tremendous player for us last year. He certainly deserves this opportunity and I wish him the best," said Coach Gibson.
Mahlon Carey (6'2" 215), a teammate of Rivers, also played linebacker for the Lions. He was second on the team with 7 interceptions and took 3 of those back for touchdowns. He was originally recruited to play running back at the University of North Carolina and was later switched to the defensive side of the ball. Team Tennessee looks to return Carey to running back. "Mahlon is a phenomenal athlete. He played nearly every position on our defense. Tennessee just inked perhaps the best athlete in the draft," Gibson stated.
Other notable AIFA players drafted by the AAFL are Mississippi Mudcats' receiver Joel Babb, and Baltimore Mariners defensive lineman, Jamar Johnson. Babb was selected in the 22nd round by Team Alabama, and Johnson was taken in the 43rd round by team Michigan.
