Lights FC Closes Home Opener Weekend by Hosting Defending League Champions
Published on May 7, 2023 under United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Las Vegas Lights FC News Release
Lights FC hosted the defending league champions San Antonio FC in the second game of the team's home opener weekend in Cashman Field.
With Zander Romero and Azriel Gonzalez being in the Las Vegas Starting XI, this marked the first time since September 30, 2020 that multiple Vegas natives were a part of Lights FC's lineup in a USL Championship game (Thomas Olsen and Blake Frischknecht vs. Reno).
San Antonio started off hot, capitalizing on a clearance off a steal to set up Samuel Adeniran inside the box, who with a curled shot opened the score for the visitors in the 5th minute of play.
Las Vegas was very aggressive, taking 15 shots in the first half and it paid off. A streaking Tabort Etaka Preston received a fabulous pass from Andres Jimenez Aranzazu and put the ball in the back of the net to level the score in the 19th minute.
San Antonio didn't register a shot on target in the second half until the 81st minute and it ended up being the one that determined the winner in this match. Forward Tani Oluwaseyi won a physical duel against defender Marcelo Lage and struck the ball to get the game winning goal for San Antonio.
NEXT GAME:
Lights FC will conclude its three game homestand by facing FC Tulsa on Saturday, May 13th at Cashman Field. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m.
The "Dog Olympics" will take place at halftime, featuring an on-field obstacle course. Any dog owners interested in participating should register now at LightsFC.com/Dogs.
