Lightning Get Key Win on the Road
December 29, 2011 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
London Lightning News Release
The London Lightning traveled to Saint John for the second game in their eastern Canada, post-Christmas, road trip to play the 8-8 Mill Rats. Still atop the league standings, the Lightning let one get away in Quebec and were looking to get back on the right track in front of the 2564 fans in New Brunswick. They were able to live up to this expectation, defeating the Mill Rats 104-93.
"I want our guys to go out and play hard every night," explained Coach Michael Ray Richardson. "What you give is what you get back in return. We gave this game 110% and we came out with what we deserved"
Defense has long been the trademark that has kept London in the upper echelon of NBL Canada standings. Consistently, coach Richardson uses most of his bench, so one can agree that the entire team buys into his 'Defense First' philosophy.
Gabe Freeman showed his consistency racking up another double double for the season, scoring 20 points and adding 17 boards. Rodney Buford also had a strong game matching Freeman with 20 points.
"We came out with a defensive plan and we executed it. It worked to our favour," emphasized Freeman on the game tonight. "Whenever our team plays defense we win basketball games. Defense is what wins championships and that's what we are heading and preparing for, it's that simple."
London does not return home until 2012, when they tip off against Moncton. That game is at 2PM at the John Labatt Centre on New Year's Day.
