Louisville Lightning News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY - January 8, 2010 - Local product Michael Furlong and a young Ohio Vortex squad fell to the Louisville Lightning by an 18-4 margin.
The Louisville Lightning got five goals and two assists from Safet Kovacevic and routed the Ohio Vortex 18-4 before a season-high 957 at Mockingbird Valley Soccer Club.
The Vortex sent mostly developmental players on this road trip as it was only an exhibition match for Ohio. It would count as a league game for Louisville, who improved to 4-2 on the year.
Ohio did have something to play for, however, as the winner would advance to the US Open Quarterfinals. Louisville will not meet the winner of the Detroit Waza and FC Indiana.
Richard Ott, Stefan Ostegren, Rob Young, and Georgi Petrov all scored goals for the Vortex, while keeper John Brubach was bombarded with 44 shots from the Louisville attack.
Simon Bird added a hat trick for the Lightning, who had six players score two or more goals.
A full-strength Vortex squad will face the St. Louis Illusion, owned by former Canton Invader Jamie Swanner, on Saturday night at 7 pm. The match will be the first of three final home games at the Canton Civic Center before finishing the season with a seven game road trip.
