Houston Comets News Release

Janel McCarville scored a career-high 34 points and Lisa Willis added a career-high 19 to help the New York Liberty beat the Houston Comets 90-87 in overtime Tuesday night, snapping the Comets' eight game home win streak. The Liberty (16-12) blew 10- and seven-point leads in the fourth period and overtime, respectively, but McCarville and Willis teamed up to push New York past the Comets (14-15). Ashley Battle hit a 24-foot 3-pointer with 46.7 seconds left in overtime to give the Liberty the lead for good after the Comets rallied from seven points down in the extra period. Mistie Williams hit two free throws with 2.2 seconds left to send the game into overtime and cap a 6-0 Comets run in the final 50.2 seconds.

Catherine Kraayeveld was the only other Liberty player to score in double figures with 11 to help the Liberty sweep the season series from the Comets (2-0). Tina Thompson scored a season-high 32 points for the Comets, who fell to 0-3 since returning from the Olympic break. Prior to Tuesday, Houston had not lost at home since suffering a 67-63 loss to Washington on June 18.

Matee Ajavon scored 16 points and Williams added 12 for Houston, which was swept by the Eastern Conference rivals for the first time since 2004. The Liberty scored the first six points of the game and dominated the rebounding game before the Comets came to life with a 13-4 run. Thompson scored seven points during that spell, and Matee Ajavon gave Houston a 21-17 lead with a long 3-pointer with 8:17 left in the period. In the last 7:37 of the half, New York outscored Houston 22-8 led by McCarville's 10 points.
