Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Former Syracuse Orange star Liam Callahan joins the Syracuse Silver Knights for the 2017-18 season. Per team and league rules, the terms of the contract were not disclosed. Callahan finished his college career after the 2016 season. He spent three seasons with the Orange and two with Villanova.
"I have watched Liam for several years now dating back to his days at Syracuse University," Silver Knights Head Coach Ryan Hall said. "He is a work horse and lets his play speak for itself. I am looking forward to him contributing to this team as he becomes more comfortable with the indoor game."
Callahan started his college career at Villanova University, where he played most of his games at left back. He transferred to Syracuse University in 2014, starting in all but two of the games he featured in. Callahan totaled three goals and 12 assists in three seasons with the Orange. He shined as a left wing back and left midfielder for SU.
"Syracuse is like my second home," said Callahan. "To get a chance to come back here and play is pretty special. To be part of an organization that represents Syracuse at a professional level is also pretty special."
Callahan was selected in the second round of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids. Most recently, he played for K-W United FC in the Premier Development League. Callahan recorded one goal and four assists with the club this past season.
"I have been a fan of Liam since watching him with Empire United Development Academy where I ran some sessions for his group," said Silver Knights General Manager Tommy Tanner. "We are very excited to have him with the Silver Knights as we continue to grow a relationship with Syracuse University and its players. Liam has quickly caught onto to the indoor game and I think he will have a great future."
Callahan is still new to indoor soccer. His tenure with the Silver Knights is the first time the Amherst, New York native plays indoor soccer professionally. But Callahan is already adapting fast to the changes between outdoor and indoor soccer.
"It's just a faster paced game," said Callahan. "You have to be very technical and good on the ball. Overall there's a lot of different aspects to the game you have to get used to. But the older guys and the coaches are patient and helping me along the way."
Callahan suits up for the orange, silver and black for the first time this Friday night when the Silver Knights open their season on the road against the Turlock Express. Syracuse opens its home schedule against the Ontario Fury for the CNY Celebration of Soccer Home Opener on Friday, November 10th, at 7:05 p.m. in the OnCenter War Memorial Arena.
