Wenatchee Wild News Release
BLAINE, Minn. - Sometimes all it takes is one deflection and an empty-netter. That was the case Wednesday for the Janesville Jets, who topped the Wenatchee Wild 2-0 on a pair of goals by Jordan Bancroft on Day 1 of competition at the ninth annual Showcase Tournament in Blaine, Minn.
Bancroft put the Jets up two minutes and 30 seconds into the contest on a deflection that found its way past Wild netminder Greg Lewis (Mars, Pa.). William Preston assisted.
Wenatchee killed two penalties during the remainder of the first frame and couldn't capitalize on its first man-advantage of the game. Trevor Stewart (East Wenatchee, Wash.), one of the Wild's top scorers in the preseason, had two quality scoring chances on the same shift late in the first period - one from the slot and the other on the doorstep moments later - but neither opportunity resulted in a goal.
Lewis made a key 1-on-1 save on Chris Cattivera with less than seven minutes remaining before the second intermission. It was one of 25 saves that Lewis made on the day.
"Greg Lewis was a positive for us," said Wild head coach John Becanic. "He played solid."
Wenatchee had two more power-play chances in the third stanza, but Janesville netminder Tony Kujava was up to the challenge. In all, Kujava made 19 saves. Bancroft tacked on the empty-netter with 46 seconds left in regulation.
Wenatchee was 0-for-4 on the man-advantage while Janesville was 1-for-3 with its lone special teams goal coming on Bancroft's empty-netter.
The Wild (0-1) will take on the Aberdeen Wings (0-1) at 11:45 a.m. Thursday. It will be the very first meeting between the two clubs.
"We'll go back to work and try to be better [Thursday] for Aberdeen," Becanic said.
