Cleveland Gladiators News Release
CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Gladiators are pleased to announce that defensive back LEVY BROWN has been named the Riddell Defensive Player of the Week by the Arena Football League for Week 16. Brown totaled a franchise single-game record 15.5 tackles, two passes defended and one interception versus San Jose last Saturday.
His 51-yard interception return for a touchdown sparked a 21-point scoring surge in the final 20 seconds of the first half for Cleveland in their 82-21 victory over the SaberCats at The Q.
"Levy made plays all over the field for us," Gladiators head coach Steve Thonn said. "It's great to see him be recognized by the league for all of his hard work last week."
Brown has 97.5 total tackles this season (83 solo, 29 assisted), which is fourth-best in the AFL at 7.0 per game. He also has accumulated four interceptions for 77 return yards and one touchdown, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 10 passes defended. He is the Cleveland Gladiators' all-time record holder for career interceptions with eight.
Brown anchors a unit that is the top scoring defense in the AFL, allowing just 43.1 points per game. The Gladiators also boast the second ranked passing defense in the league, only surrendering 245.7 yards per contest.
In the Gladiators' win over the SaberCats, the 21 points allowed by the defense became a franchise record for least amount of points allowed in a single game. The 61-point margin of victory now stands as the second-most in Arena Football League history, narrowly missing the 62-point difference in a win by Albany over Texas on July 27, 1996.
The Cleveland Gladiators travel to division-rival Milwaukee for their next contest to take on the Mustangs on July 2nd! The Gladiators will return to The Q for a clash with the Pittsburgh Power on NFL Network on Friday, July 15th at 8:00 p.m. SINGLE-GAME TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW!
