Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Mark Leiter, Jr. gave Clearwater six shutout innings, as the Threshers earned the series win with a 2-0 victory over the Daytona Tortugas at Bright House Field.
The Threshers (36-22) now own the best overall record in the Florida State League this year at 73-55, after tossing their 12th shutout of the season.
FSL Player of the Week Rhys Hoskins collected both RBI's for the Threshers on Monday night, finishing 1-for-3 with a double. Leiter (6-1) held the Tortugas off the board through six innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out three.
Clearwater worked an early lead against Amir Garrett (9-7), as the first four men reached to start the bottom of the first.
Jesmuel Valentin singled to right on a payoff pitch, and Carlos Tocci followed with a walk. Willians Astudillo then dropped down a bunt single on a 2-1 offering to load the bases.
Hoskins stepped in and took a five-pitch walk to push home a run, giving Clearwater the quick 1-0 advantage. Garrett settled in from there to strike out the side, limiting the Threshers damage to just a run in the opening inning.
The Threshers doubled that lead in the fifth inning.
Valentin worked a walk to lead things off, and Tocci sacrificed him into scoring position.
With two outs, Hoskins slammed a double to left-centerfield to bring home Valentin with the game's second and final run.
Cody Forsythe and Alberto Tirado teamed up to hold Daytona hitless through two innings of relief. Tirado worked around a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the eighth by getting Blake Trahan to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Ulises Joaquin locked down his 16th save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
The homestand wraps up on Dollar Tuesday, presented by Regions Bank, as Clearwater hosts Daytona at 7 p.m. John Richy makes his Threshers debut against Keury Mella (2-1), and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:45 p.m.
