Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (Dec. 3, 2008) - Milwaukee Wave midfielder Marcio Leite, a second-team all-league selection last year, will miss the 2008-09 season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the season's first practice on Monday.
Leite, 24, injured the knee in 2-on-1 drills without significant contact. The injury was confirmed Tuesday by a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam.
In two seasons, the native of Sergipe, Brazil had scored 130 points and thrilled Wave fans with his tremendous skill. Last year he was one of eight players in the league with at least 20 goals and 20 assists, and finished with a total of 80 points. He was the first player signed by the Xtreme Soccer League in September, a status accorded him for both his skill and his popularity in Milwaukee.
"I personally feel extremely sorry for Marcio," said Keith Tozer, Wave head coach and vice president of soccer operations. "An ACL injury is not good for any player, especially for a Brazilian player who has so much passion for game. He was really looking forward to the first year of the new league. Our hearts go out to him.
"This is an opportunity for some of the veteran players to step up, and it's an even bigger opportunity for some of our younger players. We're looking for the new stars of league, and this is a chance for them to show what they can do."
The Milwaukee Wave open their Silver Anniversary season at 6 p.m. Dec. 13 with a home game against the Detroit Ignition. The inaugural season of the Xtreme Soccer League features Milwaukee, Detroit, the Chicago Storm and New Jersey Ironmen playing a 20-game schedule from mid-December through April.
Founded this summer by the Milwaukee Wave, Detroit Ignition, New Jersey Ironmen and Chicago Storm, the Xtreme Soccer League is more than an indoor soccer league.
