Jarrett Walter Payton, who spent the 2004 NFL season on the Tennessee Titans practice squad, has been allocated to NFL Europe by the Titans and will spend this summer gaining experience and improving his football skills. He is allocated to the Amsterdam Admirals in via the NFL Europe Allocation process.
As it seems is obligatory with any story about Jarrett, he is the son of legendary running back Walter Payton, who burned as bright as a star and left us far too soon.
Titans coach Jeff Fischer has long ties to the Payton family, through playing experience with Walter Payton while both were members of the Chicago Bears. Jeff Fischer played for the Bears from 1981-1986. Fischer won a Super Bowl ring with the team in 1985, although he was injured that season.
Fischer and the Titans staff realize Jarrett Payton's potential and a season in NFL Europe will introduce him to different schemes, coaches and allow him to gain what he probably needs most: professional game experience. Payton starred for the Miami Hurricanes in college, after an injury to Frank Gore propelled him into a starting role.
NFL Europe fans can look forward to seeing the Son of Sweetness in the backfield soon, with the season starting April 2nd. Payton will be heading for St. Petersburg, Florida for NFL Europe training camp at the end of this month.
