Ronald Buys departs as Admirals GM
RONALD BUYS is leaving the Amsterdam Admirals after six seasons as General Manager, the NFL Europe League announced today. Buys, whose team achieved its first-ever World Bowl victory by beating the Berlin Thunder in Düsseldorf in June, has decided to depart the Admirals to pursue new career opportunities.
"I have had six fantastic seasons in Amsterdam," said Buys. "It is been very exciting to be a part of the development of the organization, but I feel the time is right for me to try something new. To have played a part in helping the Admirals win World Bowl for the first time means that I can move on with a real sense of achievement.
"I would like to thank all the coaches, players and staff members with whom I have worked and, especially, to say thank you to the Admirals fans who have made my time here so special and played such a big part in our World Bowl success."
Amsterdam's attendance rose for the second consecutive year in 2005 and the team's average of 12,877 has been bettered only once by the Admirals since 1998.
NFL Europe Managing Director JIM CONNELLY said: "We wish Ronald every success in his future ventures and thank him for the outstanding effort he has put in on behalf of the Admirals and the NFL Europe League. Under Ronald's leadership, the team has continued to establish itself as an important part of the sports scene in the Netherlands and has built many important new relationships that give us a strong foundation for future growth."
A former Amsterdam Crusaders football player and a member of the Dutch Olympic bobsleigh team, Buys joined the Admirals in 1999 following five years as a management consultant for companies such as Nike Europe, Heineken and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.
The Admirals' new general manager will be announced at a later date.
