MOLINE, Illinois- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (30-27-7) finished their regular season set of road games with a 3-1 loss to the Quad City Mallards (35-25-2) on Saturday night. Aaron Lee scored the Bees lone goal, his 36th of the season setting a new Killer Bees single season record.
Quad City struck twice in the first period first at 11:14 as Justin Hofstetter's shot from the point deflected past Bees netminder John Murray. As the period was coming to a close Brandon Marino game the Mallards a 2-0 advantage after dekeing past Murray.
The Bees were outshot 15-6 in the first period of play.
Neither team would tally in the second period as the two teams played a tight, physical game.
Aaron Lee would strike for his 36th of the season in the third period as he shot after coming in on a two-on-one. The goal for Lee was his 36th, setting the standard for single season goals for the Bees passing Jesse Bennefield's 2008-09 record.
The Killer Bees would pull John Murray at the end of the game to look for an equalizer but were unable to score as Quad City earned the win.
With the Tulsa loss to Missouri tonight the Bees magic number is down to three points with Tulsa having games on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday before the Bees return to action.
The Killer Bees have a pair of games remaining, both at the State Farm Arena starting Saturday night against the Laredo Bucks. The Bees finish their regular season Sunday at 6:00 p.m. against Laredo.
