Lead Vanishes in 7-3 Loss to Kernels

Cedar Rapids, IA- The Burlington Bees (60-65) saw their lead vanish late, in a 7-3 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (68-59) on Saturday night at Perfect Game Field.

The Bees broke an 11 inning scoreless streak in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead. With one out, Troy Montgomery worked a walk, becoming the Bees' first base runner of the night. After a two-out single by Jared Walsh, Connor Justus reached on an infield single, scoring Montgomery, putting the Bees on top, 1-0.

With one out in the third inning, Jahmai Jones singled to right. After moving to second on a ground out, Jones came home to score on a Matt Thaiss double, upping the lead to 2-0.

Cedar Rapids got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring a run on a soft single to center off the bat of JJ Fernandez. Cedar Rapids came back to take the lead in the seventh inning, sending nine batters to the plate. Bees' reliever Jhonny Palonco hit the lead off batter and then struck out the next batter for the first out. After Palonco hit his second batter of the inning, Kevin Garcia walked to load the bases. Casey Scogging singled into left, scoring Davis, tying the game at two. Brandon Lopez gave the Kernels the lead with a bases loaded walk. Zander Wiel capped off the inning with another bases loaded walk, upping the Kernels' lead to 4-2.

With the bases loaded and one out, Jordan Serena hit drive to center that was caught by Casey Scoggins, scoring Michael Barash, pulling the Bees to within a run a 4-3.

The Kernels opened the game up in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring three runs thanks to a RBI double by JJ Fernandez, a RBI single by Scoggins, and a RBI ground out from Brandon Lopez, making the score 7-3.

Michael Cederoth (3-0) earned the win for Cedar Rapids while Jhonny Palonco (2-1) was charged with the loss. The Bees and the Kernels continue the series on Sunday at 2:05. Jesus Castillo takes the mound for the Bees against Sam Gibbons for Cedar Rapids.
