Utah Blaze News Release

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Blaze has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with veteran LB Tommy Chavis, the franchise announced today. Chavis is coming off a standout campaign with Kansas City Command in which he led team in sacks as a rookie in 2012.

"Tommy is a versatile AFL veteran," said Head Coach Ron James. "He has the ability to play several positions along the defensive front. Tommy had a great initial season last year with Kansas City and is the type of explosive defender you look for in this league. I expect him to come in and make an immediate impact on our defense."

"I would like to thank the Utah Blaze for giving me the opportunity to join such a great organization," Chavis said. "I'm really excited to be a part of this franchise. The coaches bring a lot of enthusiasm and energy and we have a great group of players coming in. I can't wait to get started."

Last season, Chavis (6-2, 280, Missouri) started 16 games in his first AFL season and helped Kansas City produce the League's fourth-ranked defense, allowing just 281.2 total yards per game. He led all Command defenders with 6.5 sacks and eight tackles for loss, as he totaled 27 stops (19 solo) with three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, two quarterback hurries, one pass breakup and one blocked kick.

At native of Orange, Texas, Chavis was a two-year starter at the University of Missouri. He earned All-Big 12 Conference accolades as a junior after posting 4.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss in 2007.
