Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- Rockford IceHogs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Steve Martinson announced Saturday that the United Hockey League club has signed veteran defenseman Cory Laylin. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Laylin is expected to be in Hogs camp on Monday.
This season will be Laylin's third stint with Martinson, as the d-man suited up for the San Diego Gulls during the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. Laylin was a key component on the Gulls championship team during the 00-01 season, as the 5-10 blueliner racked up 4g-7a-11pts in 13 post season games.
"We have added an offensive threat from the blueline," said Martinson. "He's a defenseman that's a scoring threat every time he's on the ice."
This season marks Laylin's ninth in the pros. The majority of the Minneapolis, Minnesota native's career has been spent playing overseas. His top season statistically came during the 1999-2000 campaign when he broke through for 32g-38a-70pts in 53 games for Iserlohn EC (2.GBun).
Laylin has played three stints in North America since his collegiate career at the University of Minnesota, and played in the playoffs all three times, including his rookie season with the Flint Bulldogs (CoHL) in 1992-93. With the Golden Gophers, Laylin skated at the forward position and racked up 58g-49a-107pts in 174 college games.
The IceHogs also officially announced the signing of center Chris Gobert. Gobert is entering his second season in the pros and his second with Martinson. After beginning last season with the Idaho Steelheads (ECHL), Martinson acquired the forward, and Gobert finished his rookie season with the Gulls.
In 43 games with San Diego last season, the Marquette, Michigan native notched 16g-17a-33pts. Gobert played collegiately in his hometown for Northern Michigan University. With the Wildcats, the center averages better then a point a game, scoring 62g-86a-148pts in 142 games.
Next Game: The Rockford IceHogs begin the 2004-05 regular season on Friday, October 15 at 7:05 p.m. when the Hogs battle their rival Quad City Mallards. The first 4,000 fans to the game will receive a Rally Towel courtesy of Bud Light. For tickets call (815) 968-5222.
