Lawton's Most Influential African-Americans Honored

LAWTON, OKLA.- On the eve of Martin Luther King Day, the Oklahoma Cavalry honored the top influential African-Americans in the Lawton Community.

During halftime, the celebration began with a reading of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Owner Phil Kennedy and President/General Manager Otis Birdsong gave plaques to 15 honorees.

Honorees included Odell Gunter, Sr., Cheryl Monts, Sylvia Williams, Rev. Charles Whitlow, Ed Davis, Rev. Gary Bender, Albert Johnson, Sr., Josephine Johnson, Mike Sapenter, Billy Taylor, State Representative T.W. Shannon, Grady Brewer, Annette Dawkins, Mike Gentry, and Dr. William Smith.

"I was completely overwhelmed being recognized among this distinguished group," said State Rep. T.W. Shannon. "Dr. King's I Have a Dream speech was not only a global goal it was also local. I grew up in Lawton and watched those being honored. They deserve to be recognized," added Shannon.

The celebration continued as the Cavs beat the Skyrockets 114-98.

T.W. Shannon said the game was fantastic. It's the most exciting entertainment to come to the community in a long time. It's fun for all ages.
