Late Surge for Keene Falls Short

July 26, 2015 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Keene Swamp Bats News Release

A third inning three run homerun by Mainers third baseman Shane Hughes was enough to spark Sanford as they held on after a late Keene surge, by a score of 6-5.

The Swamp Bats offense once again was tamed early, as they were held scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning, ending a 22 inning scoreless streak.

Sanford's starting pitcher Joey Abraham threw shutout ball through six innings, allowing only three hits, while striking out nine Keene batters.

The 3-0 score would hold until the top of the sixth inning as a run would come across to score for the Mainers on an error by Swamp Bats catcher Connor Fitzsimons, as he overthrew his third baseman on a stolen base attempt by Dalton Thomas, who then came around to score the fourth Mainers run.

The long ball returned in the seventh and the eighth for Sanford when Sam Dexter and Dan Hetzel respectively hit solo homeruns to extend the Sanford lead to 6-0.

Keene didn't go down without a fight. In the bottom of the eighth inning the Swamp Bats scored five runs, including a three run homerun by Ryan Karl, his team leading seventh, to pull Keene within one run at 6-5.

The Swamp Bats were unable to push across any runs in the ninth, despite a single with one out by Shane Matheny and would fall 6-5 and recorded a loss for the fourth game in a row.

Keene falls to 9-28 on the season and has only five games remaining in the season. They have Sunday off, before playing host once again to the Sanford Mainers on Tuesday for the final time this season, with first pitch at 6:30.
