Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Late offense gave the Cannon Ballers life, but the early offense from the Carolina Mudcats proved to be too much in Kannapolis' 7-3 loss Thursday night at Atrium Health Ballpark.
RHP Kevin Folman (L, 2-2) started the night on the mound for the Ballers, struggling to keep runners off the basepaths. The former North Dakota State righty pitched 2.2 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits, walking none but striking out two. RHP Karan Patel followed in relief, making his Cannon Ballers debut. The first player of Indian descent to ever be drafted looked sharp on the mound, throwing 1.1 hitless innings, walking one and striking out one Mudcat bat.
Carolina opened the scoring in the top of the second frame on an Ernesto Martinez RBI single to center field that scored Ashton McGee. Martinez's first RBI of the game began the night with a 1-0 lead.
The Mudcats found their stride in a massive way in the top of the third. Freddy Zamora powered a ball over the left field wall, scoring Gabe Holt on the two-run home run. Five batters later, after two outs and two base hits, Noah Campbell smoked an RBI single to second base, allowing McGee to tally his second run of the ballgame to grow the lead to 4-0. Martinez then followed with an RBI single of his own on a ground ball to right field, driving in Joey Wiemer. Andre Nnebe closed out the six-run frame for Carolina with a RBI double that allowed Martinez and Campbell to cross the plate, putting the Mudcats ahead 7-0.
RHP Abner Uribe began the evening on the hill for Carolina. The No.30 prospect in the Brewers organization only went one inning, walking one but getting through the frame. LHP Brendan Murphy (W, 4-3) worked the majority of the ballgame, going six innings while allowing two hits and walking three with six punchouts.
The Ballers got on the board in the bottom of the eighth on a string of offense. After Victor Torres and Jose Rodriguez reached base, Samil Polanco singled to left field to score Torres. Two batters later, Luis Mieses added an RBI single of his own, scoring Rodriguez and loading the bases. Carolina then made a pitching change to bring in RHP Cam Robinson (S, 7), who promptly walked Harvin Mendoza with the bases loaded to shorten the Mudcats lead to 7-3.
Kannapolis will look to snap the three-game losing streak on Friday night in the fourth of six games this week with the Mudcats. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. RHP Drew Dalquist (1-5, 5.45 ERA) will begin the night for the Ballers on the mound, with Carolina sending out RHP Nick Belzer (5-2, 4.10 ERA) for the start.
Tickets can be purchased for any remaining home games at kcballers.com or at the F&M Bank Box Office located at Atrium Health Ballpark.
