Late Runs Lead to 3-2 Bears Win in Vancouver
The Yakima Bears broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning and went on to beat the Vancouver Canadians 3-2 at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia Wednesday afternoon. The win snapped a three-game losing streak, but the Bears still lost the series in Vancouver 3-2.
After three scoreless innings for both teams to start the game, the Bears took the lead in the fourth. Josh Parr led off with a double and Shaun Cooper hit a one-out double to score Parr and put the Bears up 1-0. Back-to-back doubles by the Canadians tied the game in the fifth inning. Mark Ginther started the seventh inning with a home run to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. Another double in the eighth extended the lead for Yakima, as Josh Parr hit a lead-off single, stole second base, and came home on Cooper's second double of the game. The Bears needed that run, as the Canadians pulled within one in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't tie the game.
Austin Platt got his first win in the Northwest League. Platt came in after Cody Wheeler pitched three shutout innings as the starter. Now 1-3, Platt allowed only one run on five hits and two walks. Will Locante earned his second Northwest League save, giving up a run on two hits in the ninth inning.
The Bears were outhit 10-8, but it was still the best offensive effort of the series for Yakima. Parr finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Cooper went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Ginther's homer was his third of the season.
The Bears start a six-game homestand Thursday night with the first of three games against the Spokane Indians. Game time for all three games against the Indians is scheduled for 7:05. Left-handed pitcher Alex Carreras is expected to pitch for the Bears against right-handed pitcher John Kukuruda of the Indians.
